The U.S. Citizenship test is one of the final steps in the process to become a Naturalized U.S. Citizen. The test happens during the citizenship interview. This portion of the process can be stressful for some applicants, but it doesn’t have to be.
Knowing what to expect during this step of the naturalization process can make you feel much more comfortable. You should consider the citizenship interview like a standard job interview. Dress professionally and be organized. You are required to have some documents with you during your interview so ensure you bring them along.
Here are some of the documents you’ll need when heading in for your citizenship test and interview:
*Driver’s license or state-issued identification card
*All travel documents, current or expired (think passports and other documents)
*Your green card
*Tax returns from the last five years
*A copy of your supporting documents submitted with your N-400 application
You should take a copy of your application as well. The immigration officer may ask you about your application so it’s good to have it handy. You should also take any notices you received from the USCIS and other documents that support your N-400 application. The Citizenship Test
The citizenship test includes both a Civics test that tests your knowledge of U.S. history and government and an English test that tests your knowledge of the language.
The USCIS focuses the citizenship test on 100 Civics questions, but don’t worry, you won’t be required to answer all 100 questions. The immigration officer will ask you ten of the 100 questions and you will be required to answer at least six of those questions correctly.
It’s important to know that some of the answers to the U.S. citizenship test questions can change because they relate to politicians who are currently in office.
Here are some examples of the questions on the test:
*What is the supreme law of the land? The Constitution.
*What does the Constitution do? Sets up the government. Defines the government. Protects the basic rights of Americans. All three answers are correct.
*What is an amendment? A change or addition to the Constitution.
You can prepare for the exam by taking citizenship practice tests online. FileRight offers affordable study materials to help you prepare for the test.Citizenship Interview
The immigration officer is also required to test your knowledge of the English language. You must be able to read, write and speak English.
The majority of the assessment will take place during the interview as a whole, but you will also be required to answer some language questions. An immigration officer will invite you to read three sentences, of which you must read at least one correctly. You will also be asked to write out a sentence the immigration officer will read to you.
